You may think that, when coming across a table overflowing with all manner of mouth-watering 'goodies', the choice a denture wearer has is limited.
Not so. With today's modern dentures your choice is limited only by your own personal likes and dislikes.
The same can be said about modern dentures themselves. From a choice alternative materials they are hand-made for a perfect fit and a look that fits perfectly with the way you are. You can also help determine the durability of your new denture by the choice of materials used, including the type of teeth.
Common complaints
Many people experience problems with dentures and our experts will have the answers. Some common problems are:-
-
Dentures not staying in place when talking or eating
-
Noticing extra wrinkles around the mouth
-
Noticing sore spots
-
The need to use denture pads or adhesives
People who have no teeth lose on average 1/2mm of jawbone height each year. The loss can sometimes be greater due to some medical conditions such as osteoporosis.
Gum tissues (ridges) can shrink as well as the jawbones by up to ¼" in 10 years, this is why your dentures can become loose. This may result in slurred speech, sore spots, difficulty when eating certain foods, clicking or whistling. Denture pads and adhesives can stabilize dentures, but if they are used for a long period of time, could cause more damage to the gum ridges.
A soft reline or standard/hard reline can be a short term solution for dentures 5 years old or less but for older dentures, the back teeth can become worn, making it difficult to chew. The front teeth can become discoloured or chipped and denture gums can become faded or stained.
-
If your dentures are older than 5 years, you may need new ones.
-
Gum tissue that has shrunk will not support your mouth and may cause wrinkles around the mouth, sunken cheeks, and might effect your smile. New dentures can give the effect of a 'facelift'.
Today's dentures are much more natural looking and each tooth can be positioned naturally, which gives a more realistic appearance. There are far more choices of colours for gums and teeth and new processing methods will ensure the best possible fit.
